Each type of fence has its advantages for specific situations. St. Augustine, like all of Florida, has serious heat and humidity issues to consider. These can be tough on a fence. My experience is that the QUALITY of the fence and the materials you are using is more important than the type of fence. Wood fences, for example, can withstand the harsh St. Augustine climate if you use a higher grade wood and take care to either pre-stain the wood or seal the wood regularly. Unfortunately, we have found that some local fence companies in St. Augustine use low grade lumber when building their fences. This becomes obvious just a year or two later when the fence is already beginning to fail.
